If you’re planning a wildlife photography holiday to Finland, chances are you’ll spend as much time thinking about how to transport your camera equipment as you do about the bears, wolves and wolverines waiting at the other end. It is one of the most common questions we receive from guests joining a Natures Thrill tour.
The good news is that travelling with professional camera equipment is much easier than many photographers expect. After countless journeys between the UK and Finland with equipment worth well into five figures, we’ve refined a simple packing system that keeps our gear protected, within airline limits and ready for action the moment we arrive.

Why We Recommend Finnair
For our Finland wildlife holidays we almost always recommend Finnair. Their excellent connections through Helsinki, reliable service and straightforward baggage policies make them an ideal choice for photographers travelling with valuable equipment.
For most Economy fares, Finnair permits one cabin bag measuring up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm together with one personal item measuring up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. The combined weight allowance is typically 8 kg, although passengers should always check the allowance shown on their own ticket before travelling as fare types can differ.
Never Check Expensive Camera Equipment
Camera bodies, lenses, batteries, memory cards, hard drives and laptops should always travel in your cabin baggage wherever possible. Checked luggage is exposed to impacts, temperature changes and the possibility of delays or loss.
Clothing can be replaced; irreplaceable photographs and expensive lenses cannot.

After trying numerous camera backpacks over the years, our favourite remains the Gura Gear Kiboko 22L. It is exceptionally lightweight, extremely comfortable and designed around airline cabin dimensions. Despite its modest size it swallows an astonishing amount of equipment.
Our typical packing configuration includes two professional mirrorless camera bodies, a 500mm f4 and/or 100–400mm telephoto lens, a wide-angle lens, batteries, chargers, memory cards, cleaning kit, passport and travel documents. The backpack distributes weight beautifully and remains comfortable during airport transfers.
Leave Your Tripod Legs at Home
This is one of the biggest ways to save both weight and space. Guests often assume they need to travel with a full-sized tripod, but on our Finland bear photography tours this is unnecessary. The specialist hides we use are fitted with sturdy mounting plates specifically designed for photographers. Simply attach your own tripod head directly to the plate.
This means you only need to bring your tripod head and quick-release plate. Leave the tripod legs at home and you’ll free valuable luggage space whilst reducing unnecessary weight.
Protecting Your Gear on the Journey
Once your equipment is in the cabin, a handful of small habits make the difference between arriving relaxed and arriving worried. These are the ones we follow on every departure.
Protecting Your Camera Equipment
Use padded dividers, keep lens caps fitted and avoid overfilling your backpack. Place heavier lenses close to your back for comfort. Keep silica gel packets inside the bag to reduce moisture and always allow equipment to acclimatise gradually when moving between warm terminals and the cool Finnish air to minimise condensation.
Travelling with Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries must travel in hand luggage. We recommend individual battery cases or terminal covers to prevent accidental short circuits. Charge every battery before leaving home and carry at least one charger in your cabin bag.
Memory Cards Are Your Most Valuable Asset
A camera body can be replaced; the images you’ve captured cannot. Keep memory cards with you at all times. We also recommend carrying a portable SSD drive and backing up images each evening during your tour.
Insurance Matters
Before travelling, check that your insurance specifically covers overseas travel with photographic equipment, including accidental damage, theft and the full replacement value of your gear. Record serial numbers for every body and lens and store copies of receipts securely online.
Airport Security Tips
Large telephoto lenses often attract attention during security screening. This is perfectly normal. Keep your laptop easily accessible, remain patient if your bag is inspected and allow a little extra time at the airport. We have travelled with large lenses countless times without issue.
