The Best Time of Year to Photograph Finland's Brown Bears Among Cotton Grass

Wildlife Holidays / Finland

A Few Fleeting Weeks When Finland's Peatlands Turn White

If you’ve ever admired photographs of a wild Brown Bear surrounded by a sea of delicate white flowers, there’s a good chance you’ve been looking at one of Finland’s most magical natural spectacles.

The flowers aren’t snow. They aren’t feathers. And they certainly aren’t cotton. They are cotton grass (Eriophorum).

For just a few precious weeks every year, Finland’s peat bogs burst into life as thousands upon thousands of white cotton-like seed heads dance gently in the breeze. Combined with the soft light of the Midnight Sun and the appearance of Finland’s Brown Bears, they create one of the most beautiful wildlife photography opportunities anywhere in Europe.

The display is breathtaking. But it’s also incredibly short-lived. Miss it by a couple of weeks, and the magic is gone. So when is the very best time to photograph Brown Bears amongst Finland’s cotton grass?

Late May – mid June

What Is Cotton Grass?

Backlit by the midnight sun, cotton grass takes on an almost magical appearance, resembling glowing balls of cotton wool. These beautiful little plants can carpet Finland’s swamplands, creating a stunning foreground for wildlife photography.

Why Early June Is the Sweet Spot

What Makes This Season So Photogenic

Midnight Sun Makes Everything Better

Cotton grass alone is beautiful, but combine it with Finland’s famous northern light and it becomes extraordinary. During early summer, daylight stretches almost endlessly across eastern Finland. As evening approaches, the sun sits low above the horizon for hours, so instead of harsh overhead light photographers enjoy warm golden tones. The white cotton heads catch the light beautifully, mist often forms over nearby wetlands and the atmosphere becomes almost dreamlike.

Brown Bears Love These Wetland Habitats

Cotton grass isn’t simply attractive to photographers — it’s part of a much larger ecosystem that supports an incredible diversity of wildlife. Many peatlands provide:

  • Insects.
  • Fresh vegetation.
  • Moist ground.
  • Quiet travel routes.
  • Rich surrounding berry habitats later in the season.

Bears regularly move between forest and wetland, creating wonderful opportunities to photograph them against these beautiful natural backdrops. Unlike carefully managed gardens, these scenes are entirely wild.

A Photographer's Dream Composition

One of the greatest advantages of cotton grass is how it transforms composition. The soft white seed heads naturally create:

  • Beautiful foreground blur.
  • Layered depth.
  • Leading lines.
  • Natural framing.
  • A sense of scale.

Wide aperture lenses produce wonderfully dreamy images as the cotton grass melts into soft white bokeh surrounding the bear. Instead of simply documenting an animal, you’re creating environmental wildlife photography.

Pair It With Cubs

Another reason early summer is so popular is because mothers often begin appearing with young cubs. Watching playful cubs exploring among bright white cotton grass creates some of the most heartwarming wildlife photography opportunities imaginable. Young bears chase one another, climb fallen logs, investigate insects and occasionally disappear completely beneath the sea of white flowers before popping back into view.
